Introduction

The Graça Machel Trust (GMT) was established in 2010 as a Pan-African institution, whose mission is to amplify women’s movements, influence governance, and promote women’s contributions and leadership in the economic, social, and political development of Africa and, advocate for the promotion and protection of children’s rights and dignity. Drawing on our Founder, Mrs. Graça Machel’s life’s work as a liberation fighter for political freedom in Africa, advocate, global activist for the rights of children and women, and SDG champion, the Trust’s mandate is to build movements to drive transformative change that uplifts women and children.

In 2021 GMT commissioned the Pan-African Adolescent Girls movement to unleash the innate power of African adolescent girls in a bid to inspire a new generation of strong African women who can lead Africa’s transformation. This indigenous African movement is designed and led by and for African adolescent girls. It exists to address the societal cultural barriers that impede adolescent girls’ holistic development. These adolescent girls, grounded in their African identity and mindful of their inherent capabilities and dignity, will be the drivers of Africa’s social transformation. The movement aims to reach 2.5 million girls by 2026 and 10 million by 2030.

The movement approach is built on developing strategic partnerships that will provide targeted adolescent girls within their projects, with the peer community, tools, skills, and confidence to maximise their involvement in activities, while triggering a ripple impact for other girls within their communities. Together, we will facilitate the behaviour change needed to realise positive outcomes by: I) providing leadership and self-actualisation capacity strengthening in a supportive environment designed to build the girls’ agency and social capital, II) addressing the societal barriers that impede on their holistic development.

Since its inception, we have so far established 8 “nests” in six African countries namely:  Ethiopia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kenya, and Mozambique and, expect to launch the movement in five more countries by end of 2025. With the support of 910 adolescent girls between the ages of 10-24 years, from sub Saharan Africa, we designed an adolescent-friendly curriculum which will reach at least 5,000 girls directly and over 500,000 more through a digital platform annually. This curriculum is currently being  administered within the national nests

Within the Nests, adolescent girls will meet once a month where they will be mentored by the nurtured Eagles girls aged  20 years and above and be encouraged to develop innovative projects throughout the program as outreach activities in their communities. At the end of the curriculum year, the girls will graduate, having completed this transformative journey.
