Women Advancing Africa (WAA)

Women Advancing Africa is a new Pan-African flagship initiative four day conference hosted by the Graça Machel Trust to acknowledge and celebrate the critical role women play in shaping Africa’s development agenda and driving social and economic transformation.

The WAA Forum puts women at the centre stage of the continent’s economic liberation, by providing a highly visible platform to showcase African women’s leadership and concrete contributions towards building a stronger, more vibrant and equitable future for all Africans.

  • A plurality of financial institutions and systems (including alternate models) are developed, and they respond to the needs of diverse women in an inclusive manner to enable access to financial products and services as well as wealth creation
  • Women occupy management and leadership positions across sectors in the economy
  • Women (adults and youth) are financially savvy and have developed the capacity to engage in wealth creation
  • All public, private and non-governmental institutions demonstrate commitment to change by making pledges, which lead to broad impact
  • Dynamic networks are in place and they create a basis for generating opportunities for women to be supported and mentored
  • Social and digital media drives the visibility of the initiative and amplifies women’s voices

“Dream big, re-imagine the society we want to build and leave as a legacy for our children” – Graça Machel

Women Advancing Africa is a new Pan-African flagship initiative that was hosted by The Graça Machel Trust to acknowledge and celebrate the critical role women play in shaping Africa’s development agenda and driving social and economic transformation. WAA Forum was successfully held from the 9th to 12th August 2017 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Its main focus was on “Driving Social and Economic Transformation” and was attended by more than three hundred delegates who celebrated women’s achievements, discussed the challenges they face, and identified solutions needed to strengthen the participation of women in different sectors of the economy.

We recognise that this is an ambitious but vital agenda. We will not achieve it alone and will require resources and sponsorship as we move to make this effort sustainable.

We will require prospective sponsors and partners on this important initiative, for both monetary and in-kind contributions. More details on registration, programme and speakers to follow.
