Introduction
The Graça Machel Trust (GMT) was established in 2010 as a Pan-African institution, whose mission is to amplify women’s movements, influence governance, and promote women’s contributions and leadership in the economic, social, and political development of Africa and, advocate for the promotion and protection of children’s rights and dignity. Drawing on our Founder, Mrs Graça Machel’s life’s work as a liberation fighter for political freedom in Africa, advocate, global activist for the rights of children and women, and SDG champion, the Trust’s mandate is to build movements to drive transformative change that uplifts women and children.
In 2021, GMT commissioned the Pan-African Adolescent Girls movement to unleash the innate power of African adolescent girls in a bid to inspire a new generation of strong African women who can lead Africa’s transformation. This indigenous African movement is designed and led by and for African adolescent girls. It exists to address the societal cultural barriers that impede adolescent girls’ holistic development. These adolescent girls, grounded in their African identity and mindful of their inherent capabilities and dignity, will be the drivers of Africa’s social transformation. The movement aims to reach 10 million by 2030.
The movement approach is built on developing strategic partnerships that will provide targeted adolescent girls within their projects, with the peer community, tools, skills, and confidence to maximise their involvement in activities, while triggering a ripple impact for other girls within their communities. Together, we will facilitate the behaviour change needed to realise positive outcomes by providing leadership and self-actualisation capacity strengthening in a supportive environment
designed to build the girls’ agency and social capital, II) addressing the societal barriers that impede their holistic development.
Since its inception, we have so far established 13 national “nests” in twelve African countries, namely: Ethiopia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kenya, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, Rwanda, Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda. We expect to launch the movement in 4 more countries, namely Cameroon, Senegal, Egypt and Sierra Leone, by the end of 2026. Nests are support hubs that provide the core self-actualisation and leadership capacity strengthening and foster solidarity amongst adolescents using a peer-to-peer mentoring approach. In 2023, with the support of 910 adolescent girls between the ages of 10-24 years from sub–Saharan Africa, we designed an adolescent-friendly leadership curriculum which is on track to reach at least 10,000 girls directly and over 500,000 more through the Movement’s My Kiota digital platform annually. This curriculum is currently being administered within the national nests both physically and digitally.
Within the Nests, adolescent girls meet at least once a month, where they are mentored by the nurtured Sister Eagles aged 20 years and above and are encouraged to develop innovative projects throughout the program as outreach activities in their communities. After completing modules I-VI of the curriculum, the girls will be certified, having completed this transformative leadership moulding journey. The nests also serve as the platform where we facilitate their active involvement and contributions in key national, continental and global advocacy decision-making forums.
The movement program objectives are:
- To ensure that adolescent girls are equipped to effect change at the individual and community levels.
- To cultivate an environment that enables adolescents to influence decisions, policies, and actions that shape their well-being and future.
