“True leadership is measured not by power,
but by the dignity and justice it creates for others.”

Areas of focus

Gender equality and women’s leadership
“We must open the doors and create spaces where women can lead—not as an exception, but as the rule.”
– Graça Machel
Mrs Machel has consistently insisted that women’s leadership is essential for social transformation. Through advocacy, she pushes for gender parity in decision-making across sectors. We amplify Mrs. Machel’s call for African women to take their rightful place in leadership—not occasionally, but structurally. Through public advocacy, global platforms, and thought leadership, we push for gender parity in decision-making spaces across sectors.

Women’s economic advancement
“When women control their own income, families thrive, communities prosper, and nations grow wiser.”
– Graça Machel
The Office of the Founder champions women’s economic advancement as a cornerstone of social transformation. Through advocacy, high-level influence, and strategic partnerships, we advance financial inclusion, access to capital, and policy reforms that unlock the full economic potential of African women.

Climate justice
“Climate change is not only a crisis of nature—it is a crisis of humanity. And it is the poor, especially women, who carry its heaviest burden.”
– Graça Machel
Mrs Machel is a leading African voice on climate, highlighting the resilience of women and youth on the frontlines of climate change. We support her engagement in global climate forums and partner with movements that centre the voices of African women and youth as frontline responders, innovators, and architects of climate resilience.

Peace, democracy, and good governance
“We cannot build peace while ignoring injustice. True peace is not the silence of guns, but the presence of dignity.”
– Graça Machel
Drawing on her roots as a freedom fighter, Mrs Machel advocates for ethical leadership, justice, and reconciliation across Africa. Through collaborations with partner organisations such as The Elders and ACCORD, and direct convenings with civil society and policymakers, we advance peacebuilding efforts that are rooted in empathy, accountability, and the lived experiences of communities affected by conflict.

Quality education and health equity
“To deny a child education is to steal their future. To deny them healthcare is to deny their right to life.”
– Graça Machel
As Mozambique’s former Minister of Education and a global leader in child rights, Mrs Machel sees education and health not as privileges but as birthrights. The Office works to spotlight and influence policy on education and healthcare, especially for girls, rural communities, and displaced children.

Food security and nutrition
“A child who goes to bed hungry is the clearest indictment of our collective failure. And we must not sleep until that hunger ends.”
– Graça Machel
From her earliest humanitarian work, Mrs Machel has fought to make food security and nutrition pillars of justice and human development. The Office of the Founder elevates food security and nutrition as core pillars of justice and human capital development, and we advocate for policies and partnerships that prioritise nutrition as a public good.
