Message Of Condolence On Passing Of Eddie Daniels

Dear Daniels Family,

I have been deeply saddened to hear that your beloved Eddie has passed away. I wish to convey to you our condolences and our sense of loss. Madiba cherished his friendship with Eddie.

Although they came from different political traditions and formations, Madiba and Eddie became close through fifteen years of imprisonment on Robben Island. Madiba, who gave Eddie the nickname Danny, once said of him: “We recall his loyalty and courage; his sense of humour, and justice as well as total commitment to the struggle of the prisoners for the eradication of injustice and the betterment of their conditions.”

Many held Eddie in high regard. We join them, and all South Africans, in saying hamba kahle to an outstanding South African.

With warm regards,

Graça Machel

Message of condolence to the Chiba family on the passing of Isu Chiba, 9th December 2017

To the family, friends and comrades of the late Isu ‘Laloo’ Chiba,

I am deeply saddened to hear that Mr Chiba has passed away. I send my condolences to his dear wife, family, friends and comrades. South Africa has lost another patriot, stalwart of the struggle and friend of Nelson Mandela.

Most of Mr Chiba’s life was dedicated to the struggle against apartheid and the building of democracy. He was a member of a generation of leadership which shaped the country’s history in profound ways. As Madiba once said of his friend: “he was a stalwart colleague who proved a great asset.”

We honour his many contributions, from the work he did in the very early years of MK to his many years of incarceration on Robben Island, from his distinguished service in Parliament to his unflagging support for the work of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation. He will not be forgotten.

We join with many in saying Hamba Kahle to an outstanding South African.

With sincere condolences

Graça Machel

“We should all remember that a better nourished region means better health outcomes, improved economies and sustained development for better futures”- Graça Machel.

The Graça Machel Trust, together with the World Food Programme hosted a Southern Africa Launch of the Global Nutrition Report 2017 on 21st November 2017 at the UN Offices in Johannesburg. This year’s Report recognizes the interdependence of the SDGs and how addressing malnutrition can enable achievement of other SDGs. Speaking at the event, Sheila Sisulu in her capacity as Chairperson of Tiger Brands Foundation Board of Trustees, stated that private sector must get much more involved in the collective efforts to improve nutrition for their own sake if SADC countries are to have the intellectual capacity required for the knowledge economies of the future. In line with the SDGs, everyone must come together and take integrated action to provide good nutrition for all. To read the full report, click here
